The influence of impurity elements on die-casting aluminum alloys, with Fe, Si, Mn, Cu, and Mg controlling the boundaries
The alloy composition is not just about the grade, excessive impurities can directly cause aluminum adhesion, cracks, brittle fracture, porosity, and hard spots. Foreign trade orders often require material spectrum reports.
1、 Iron Fe (the most critical impurity)
If the Fe is too low, it is easy to stick to aluminum and strain the mold cavity; Excessive Fe leads to the formation of needle shaped iron rich phases, causing the casting to become brittle, crack, and have poor machining tool lines. ADC12 Fe:0.6–1.2%; A356 Fe control ≤ 0.2%, strictly lower for automotive parts.
2、 Silicon Si
ADC12 is high in silicon, with good fluidity and wear resistance, but it contains a lot of silicon slag, which can easily block exhaust and scratch the mold cavity; A356 silicon is about 7%, suitable for T6 heat treatment, with high strength and good elongation. The silicon content fluctuates, and the liquidity and shrinkage rate change synchronously.
3、 Manganese Mn
Used to neutralize harmful phases of iron, transform needle shaped iron phases into blocks, and reduce brittleness; Insufficient Mn amplifies the harm of Fe; Excessive Mn leads to the formation of coarse intermetallic compounds, resulting in hard spots and tool breakage during processing.
4、 Copper Cu, magnesium Mg
Cu enhances strength and hardness, but increases the tendency for thermal cracking; Mg is a strengthening element for A356 heat treatment. If Mg is insufficient, the strength cannot increase after T6; Mg is too high, resulting in an increase in oxidation slag inclusion and intensified gas absorption in the melt.
5、 The significance of impurity control for foreign trade orders
North American and European auto parts orders will have a limit on impurities; The proportion of recycled materials is too high, impurities continue to accumulate, and batch quality drifts. The proportion of recycled materials, slag removal, refining, and gas removal are impurity control measures. The low pressure A356 wheel hub has the strictest control over Fe and Mg. Google's "Aluminum Die Casting Impurity Element Control" is aimed at smelting engineers.
FAQ
Is it better to have lower Fe content?
No, it's too low and prone to sticking to aluminum, so a reasonable range is needed.
Will impurities accumulate if there are too many recycled materials?
Yes, repeated remelting of Fe and gradual enrichment of impurities.
Can the rich iron phase be seen on X-rays?
Coarse ones are fine, while smaller ones require a metallographic microscope.
Can A356 have high Fe content like ADC12?
No, A356 is sensitive to Fe and has a significant decrease in elongation.
What does magnesium burn mean?
During melting, magnesium is oxidized and burned off, resulting in substandard composition and insufficient T6 strength.
What causes hard spots?
High Fe, high Mn, coarse intermetallic compounds.
7. If impurities exceed the standard, can the mold make up for it?
Molds can only alleviate, not cure, and must be controlled through melting.
8. Does spectral testing need to be done for every batch?
The host supporting foreign trade orders require batch by batch testing and filing.
